there resides remnants of resistant resonant dissonance
a difference of opinions from a hopeless romantic realist to indomitable idealists

and before anyone gets objectionable, the notebook’s debatable but they still chose each other in the end
and despite havin’ two great generations of matrimonial modelling
i’ve yet to have a healthy harmony
ignorantly ignorin’ red flags waving in the wind like i’m intermittently colour blind
werely worryin’ i’m unworthy of gatherin’ green ones

the tragic travesty with traditional romance trope tales is they don’t tell the truth only bluff
cause speaking from experience, love is just not enough
i know hearing that can be really tough
but i’m afraid that love alone ain’t enough
and at the risk of sounding nihilistic i’m still enthusiastic about the ‘unrealistic’ side of the romance logistic

now i’d be remiss if i didn’t reflect on the greatest romance of recent recollection
that of tim & dawn of the office (uk)
but, as i’m sure you’ve come to realise it carries with it a controversial caveat
while it may be canon i can’t in good conscience count the christmas special
i’m talkin’ series two, episodes five and six, comic relief, cheeky charity collar pull kiss, mic drop confidential confession
“she said no by the way”, still f*cks off to florida
he stays still in a wernham ground hogg day
really i rejoiced in tiny tim canterbury’s tale of a christmas miracle come back but not everyone gets a brighter dawn

because for most the devil you know seems safer than the unexplored unknown you don’t
and apologies to anyone who still hasn’t seen this meddled with masterpiece
but it came out over twenty years ago, over double the spoiler statute of limitations

now, just like my favourite romance rengas this story has a realistically unresolved romantic residual
no boom box serenade, no candle*lit table top date, no “i got off the plane”
gimmie a break–

from long lonely nights, empty bench sky lines and painful pills to swallow
sorry to say this protagonist’s pathos perpetuates permanently
