interlude 2 - divanhana & dj ritu lyrics
the centuries*long journey and evolution of sevdalinka experienced a renaissance in the mid*20th century, when numerous authors put words to paper and created melodies on keys and strings inspired by the songs that had echoed through the ages
one such figure was jovica petković, a serb from šumadija by birth; his work established him as one of the most prolific song composers in the style of bosnia and herzegovina’s urban traditional music
during his lifetimе, jovica often recounted that his song, “it’s bеautiful to look from igman”, composed in the distant year of 1958, was among the most beautiful he had ever written
the lyrics capture the spirit of camaraderie in old sarajevo, while the melody was inspired by the call to prayer from the gazi husrev*beg mosque, located about 50 meters from his apartment near the famous “slatko ćoše” coffee and sweets shop in the old town baščaršija
even today, sevdalinka continues to travel, seeking souls longing for melancholy, for serenity and joy
it seeks to anchor itself, searching for a heart it can touch and inspire, so that from it may flow poetry and melody
and a new sevdalinka may be born — an eternally present song
dear listeners, tune in, and enjoy listening to radio sevdah. up next, “it’s beautiful to look from igman.”
