colley cibber was born on the 6th of november 1671 and was an actor, manager, playwright, and poet laureate. he wrote 25 plays for his own drury lane theater company, but his reputation was derided and ridiculed. his poetry was treated in much the same way, but his social and political opportunism is thought to have gained him the laureateship over far better poets. he died on the 11th of december 1757
