i. beats verses lyrics
being someone with the love of the hip hop genre and the love of -n-lyzing lyrics, i sometimes see myself enjoying tracks from “mainstreams” artist. not to say all mainstream artists are bad or have bad lyrics, but 8/10, most “mainstream” artists are pretty simplistic lyrically. i am well aware of the intentions of mainstream hip hop, to have fun and enjoy something to bob your head to. however, the formula for these songs gets very old very quickly, in my option at least. look at every chief keef track ever released: the same, but semi-tweeked lyrics and subject matter with banging trap beats. not to say i don’t enjoy these tracks, (i really do, actually) they just get old extremely quickly
on the other hand, most artists that are out-of-this-world lyrical, usually have great production and throws you on an adventure to figure out what in the f-ck they’re trying to paint a picture about (without looking up sh-t ie rap g*nius)
overall, i see all music as art; not just hip hop and am glad that the genre expands soo far with always new sh-t to discover simplistic or not
