lady liberty - my ruin lyrics
i am lady liberty
the female embodiment of freedom
in the face of adversity
an unwavering icon
of hope and empathy
a silent witness to history
iron in spine and steel in bravery
my broken chains are a tribute
to the abolition of slavery
my foundation is rooted
in illumination not dimming
for those who seek refuge
and a new beginning
i was born from the promise
to welcome all
to stand in my truth
and answer their call
i represent the huddled masses
yearning to breathe free
the gateway to opportunity
for all humanity
a mighty woman
with a crown of resolve
a powerful symbol of possibilities for all
my robe is a shelter
in my gaze you can trust
fixed on the horizon
from dawn until dusk
mother of exiles
weathered in green
unyielding and ageless
proud and serene
sculpted with spirit
a keeper of light
an enduring beacon
through fog and through fight
a torch of copper
whose eternal flame
represents enlightenment
not shame
a timeless guardian
with tablet in hand
inscribed with a date
we must all understand
a gift of friendship
and steadfast presence which shines
a reminder, my torch
lights the path and defines
but lately i weep
as i read my bronze plaque
for what i once stood for
is under attack
i see fear where freedom
once fought and bled
and silence where strength
once boldly led
the screams of injustice
grow louder and stark
as political discourse
has ripped us apart
i watch as compassion
withers and dies
where those we once welcomed
are scorned and despised
why?
resilient, resistant
through storms i have stood
watched men make good trouble
and some up to no good
i’ve seen innocent men
disappeared into darkness
the evil that men do
with hate and a harshness
children in cages
while cries pierce the air
women deported
their dreams in despair
protests and rallies
for what we hold dear
watched honor and oaths
become insincere
hearts have been poisoned
and hardened completely
so deeply with cruelty
but not indiscreetly
this land that i guard
now divided and cold
has betrayed its own story
my statue once told
but america mends
it breathes and it bends
it’s the heartbeat
of every voice that defends
both fragile and fierce
in its grand design
to stay true to itself
and with who we align
true liberty, justice
and freedom’s worth saving
it doesn’t come from
religion or flag*waving
it comes from hindsight
not hating immigrants
watchful eyes awake
with vigilance
yours, mine and ours
in persistence
a declaration of resistance
