dear lord, please help me to drive this ol’ truck down this big ol’ highway

the truck stops don’t look as bright as they used to

why, ten years ago, even the narrow roads we had
were safer’n these wide strips of concrete we have today

people really are hard to understand when they’re behind the wheel of a car
they seem to take their feelins out on all the other drivers
sometimes i get to thinkin’ they really hate truck drivers

but, when i get upset because i had to bear down on them airbrakes
after someone cut in front of me
and when i have to swerve to miss a car that pulled out in front of me
i start to thinkin’
what an important person i am, drivin’ this load
without all these big trucks, haulin’ millions of tons of freight
people’d be a lot worse off than they are
oh, i know that this may be silly, lord, for me to be prayin’ like this
but i just had to talk to someone who’d understand me

well, i gotta head on down the road
there’s people waitin’ on this truck
and if everything goes alright i’ll be at that terminal right on schedule
