i sat down by the river bed
when a yellowish turtle decided to join me
there was no introduction or even a name
he just sat down and spoke
“i’m more than skin and bones, i swear”
like the dirt under where i’m sitting

in my little pond i can look out

feeling the heat congregate on my nose and cheeks
letting the monologue repeat

i’m more than skin and bones i swear
cold wet eyes dangling tears onto where i’m standing
no comfort in the confusion that holds him
he reaches out his little turtle paw
its dry now
in contrast with his eyes
“i’m quite uncomfortable with this conversation” i said
trying to be hostile
trying to break a net that holds him and i
and i walk away looking out of a window out of an apartment into a little hospital
there is salt in the tears that fall in my wounds
this dam doesn’t crack for any perfume
