welcome. my name is aditya seth, and today i’ll be explaining how to invest and gain profits in the stock market

there are many ways to gain profits in the stock market
so i’ll go over the main methods
but before we start investing
we have to first understand what the stock market is and how it operates
the stock market is a collection of exchanges
where traders buy and sell stocks of companies
in total, there are 16 stock markets across the globe that have a market capitalization of over 1 trillion dollars
the 2 biggest exchanges are the new york stock exchange and the nasdaq
both which are in new york

the new york stock exchange has the biggest market cap, with a value of 22.9 trillion dollars

you might be wondering what a stock is
a share of a stock is literally a share in the ownership of the company. when you buy a share of stock you are ent-tled to a small fraction of -ssets and earnings of that company
stocks are issued by companies to raise capital
also known as money
this comes in handy for taking part in new projects or growing the business in general
there are two types of stocks
common stock and preferred stock
preferred stocks are stocks that give a predetermined amount of dividend to the shareholder
whereas the dividend received through the common stock can vary
depending on how well the business is doing
there are many other differences
but i’ll touch on them another time

in order to buy stocks, you need to

hire a broker from any brokerage
brokers buy and sell stocks through an exchange
while charging a commission
a broker is simply a person who is licensed to trade stocks through the exchange
in the news, you might have seen reports frequently talk about the dow jones industrial, the s&p 500, and the nasdaq composite
they aren’t stock markets, however they are market indexes

market indexes show how the market is operating in general
by taking the weighted averages of the market
and tracking how it does over time
the dow jones industrial tracks the 30 largest us stocks
the nasdaq composite tracks the hundred largest
and the standard and poor 500, also known as the s&p 500 tracks 500 of the largest us stocks

next we’ll go on to the two main types of markets
bull markets, and bear markets

a bull market is where stock prices increase, and a bear market is the opposite
currently, we are in a bull market, and have been since 2009
this makes it the longest bull run in history
in general, the average bull market lasts longer than the bear market
so theoretically, if you keep your money in the market for long enough, your money should more than double or triple or increase
