creativity

it’s in our souls when we’re born
we start with a fire in our hearts
to touch everything, see how it works
we learn our world and how much it hurts

we go to school and learn the basics
science, math, history, it’s all elementary
but then it becomes high school and still
we learn the same things with a few extra topics
how does this help the future?

when students can look up answers on google
or put them into an online calculator
and find the answer quicker than a mathematician can calculate
in his head, isn’t that scary?
and no matter how much we learn the topic
technology will always be one step ahead

and yet the board of education says
“no more art cl-sses”, “focus on core cl-sses”
when art and creativity is in fact
the thing that is closest to our core of humanity

i saw a math question shared on facebook yesterday
“an orchestra of 120 players takes 40 minutes
to play beethoven’s 9th symphony. how long
would it take for 60 players to play the symphony?”

pretty pathetic, right?
if your brain didn’t calculate that fast enough
the answer is still 40 minutes
you were probably too busy worrying about
excusing your dear aunt sally so you
could be the first to answer the question
and get the best grade on the exam

the reason i love creativity so much
is because technology can never beat us at it
it’s the foundation of what makes us human
and it’s something we can connect over

when you listen to someone’s new album
and bond with your friends over the cool lyrics
or you look at a work of art and feel

the heart and soul put in the paint strokes

art doesn’t just require a simple task
it requires love, hope, anger, feeling
it requires the purest of emotions that we can give
and so that is why i tell you this

never lose the creativity you have
pursue the tasks you want
free your mind and create something
today, tomorrow, a year-long process
put your emotion into paper, into a song
let the love and anger flow out until you
have nothing else left to give

creativity is what we have
and soon all we will ever have
it is the solution for all the hate
it is the way to save the world

listen to the creativity
shut everything else out
it won’t take long
give it a chance
you’ll see what it’s like
to dream with me
