it gets better project
the “it gets better” internet-based project and charitable organization was founded on december 10, 2010 by don savage, a syndicated columnist and author, and terry miller. to help g-y youth realize that in the face of bullying it can get better, and to inspire hope when facing har-ssment, they posted youtube videos in may 2011. they also used other media resources in order to reach a wider audience and convey their message of hope (through mtv, logo, or radio stations)
the project was triggered by the suicide of billy, who was called “f-g” multiple times by his cl-ssmates at school. the 15 year-old freshman in a high school in indiana hanged himself in his barn, and was found by his mother the next day. a number of similar cases involving the suicide of a g-y teen show that this is a widespread phenomenon, and have lead to the creation of dan savage’s project
they direct a message not only to the lgbt population, but to the entire nation, saying we should accept differences in a diverse community. if we are not ready to welcome differences, then we don’t build a community in a friendly and inclusive way. the founders of the project invite us to support the project by donating. recording, sharing our story, pledging, wearing, buying, sharing their book and staying connected
