lirik lagu fight for our lives – jordana lesesne
[intro: jordana lesesne]
some people are born into this fight. we don’t choose it, it chooses us. i’ve been fighting it my entire life. in the year 2000, matthew gostlin and a gang of white men tried to murder me in a transphobic hate crime after i left a rave in ohio. were it not for an interracial couple who saved me, they probably would have.
i got receipts from this fight, in the form of nerve damage. today, i literally can’t feel half of my face as a result of their attack on mе. and they never spеnt so much as a night in jail. they never even were arrested. and my life was forever changed for the worse.
now, imagine if the situation had been reversed: imagine if i had been a young, white trans girl brutally beaten by a gang of black men. you d*mn well know they would have at least been arrested, and probably would have spent more than a night in jail. instead, i caught h*ll. you, like me, might be a veteran of this fight for social justice; or, this might be the first time that you yourself have stood up.
[black lives matter protesters]
no justice, no peace
no racist police
no justice, no peace
no racist police
no justice, no peace

no justice, no peace

this moment, this movement, is not just about the deaths of tamir rice, michael brown, eric garner, breonna taylor, or george floyd: it’s also about the deaths of dana martin, itali marlowe, tony mcdade, zoe spears, ashanti carmon, riah milton, and too many others—black transgender people whose names almost never become a nationally trending hashtag.

like the late toni morrison said: “if you’re gonna hold someone down, you’re gonna have to hold on by the other end of the chain. you are confined by your own repression.” let me say that again: you are confined by your own repression.
so, this is not a game, this is not a meme, this is not a hashtag. we are not a joke. and silence is not an option: silence equals an excuse of the violence. and make no mistake: we learned to fight for our lives. oh, yeah, we’ll honor the dead, but we’ll fight like h*ll for the living.
