this a story about love
this a story about fear
this a story about how the two can leave you close to tears
this a story about love
this a story about fear
this a story about how the two can leave you close to tears
in this life we learn, every decision comes with a consequence
we often want to help
but sometimes you could do the opposite

[verse 1]

man i live in a city where we never needed speed humps
we got too many potholes
we hardly ever speed up
government explanations are as long as these queues
never needed speed limits cause we’re tryna save fuel
but we still ride or die
everyday struggles
can teach a man to be humble
teach you lessons
it’s been long road since independence
i’ve got friends around the continent, hitting me up with questions like, “are you surviving in zim?”
“are you under oppression?”

to the world, zimbabwe suffers
they watch us on bbc
or cnn
they only see us when
the bad is on tv
cause
either its inflation
or riots around the nation
a cholera out-break
or cyclones that-take
too many innocent lives, they see the heartbreak, and i know what that implies
but there’s more than meets the eye
zimbabweans are resilient
we will always survive
in god above we trust
so i know we’ll be alright-

my generation will live in a better nation tomorrow
we need education for future leaders we’ll choose to follow
and in 2017, i was in junior city council
advocating activism for children living in sorrow
harare isn’t compton
it’s nothing like soweto
but be rest -ssured, we have sad stories from the ghetto
we have way too many kids spending days on the street instead of cl-sses
that sleep on concrete instead of being under blankets
on a mattress
and it gets more tragic
some of these children come from child headed families, if they don’t beg on the street, there’s no food on the table
their parents have p-ssed away, they’re too siiick or they’re disabled

plus some of these street kids have unprotected s-x with other street kids
no secret
that baby’s gonna to grow up in streets, this
is
more than unfortunate
just like how it’s fortunate, you grew up in decent
homes, with your latest phones
you see two dollars as mobile data that lasts you a day
they see two dollars as the only meal they’re having that day
as junior council, we had a difference to make
what can we say?

[verse 2]
late that december
i vividly remember
we invited street kids for a christmas lunch
at a park in town and
all you heard was laughter and the music they were dancing to
in the afternoon, it eased the pain like a parachute
you wouldn’t want to dance with them too
cause they’ll embarr-ss you
laughter is the best medicine and this was like avenues, clinic
we spoke to them youths
we opened an avenue, isn’t it
ironic words cut deep but they can bandage you

then in the, midst of joy a serious face approached me
he was calm with a single tear falling down his cheek
he looked 11 or 12
with a gap between his teeth
he had on some dirty clothes and no shoes were on his feet
he was
holding his arm, from his palm, blood was gushing out
he told me he was dancing when he fell on broken gl-ss
so, all of a sudden, all of us councillors
we were rushing now
we bandaged his cut with a shirt, as we thought of a plan
till i realize a sad truth, he doesn’t have a home

no place take a bath dude
no clean change of clothes
so it’s, obvious to say
he has no medical aid
oh wait, no time to think
that t shirt that was grey
is quickly turning red as his cut, soaks it in blood
enough with all the panicking
let’s deal with what is happening
my car is parked close by
a blue honda crv
with a crack on the window screen
and new blood stains on the seats

it’s four councillors and the child, driving madly on the streets
running red lights, dodging cars like a fast and furious scene
see, we’re rushing to a hospital
and in the backseat
we’re conversating with the boy
tryna keep him at ease
we went from small talk with this kid from the street
to deep discussions with a troubled boy named denzel
just try think of :
your lips cracking from starving on a long summer day
and your feet going numb on a cold night in winter

jeez
sometimes you wake up to beatings from the police
entering a nightmare after leaving your dreams
i looked into the rear view mirror to watch him speak
denzel, tell me
how’d you end up on the street

dear, here we learn how every decision comes with a consequence we often want to help but sometimes you could do the opposite

[verse 3]
he said
my mother p-ssed a few years back, i’m feeling trapped
soon after that, my dad married a woman that
despises reminders that my father had a life before they met
and to me she said
“that includes you”
they say home is where the heart is
and since my mama left my home is heartless
regardless
i can’t continue living where i’m told that i’m the fault that
everything’s bad, money problems
to be honest
i just had to leave that
so back in august
i took some money from my daddy’s wallet
hopped on a bus
came to the city
you can best believe that
i can never go back
street life isn’t the best but it’s the best option i have
later on, i thought denzel’s words after he’d been treated
by doctors at parirenyatwa
after he had eaten
after praying with him
how could we just leave him
by a sidewalk, instead of doorstep
in the evenin’

we insisted till we finally convinced him to compromise
he listened but he said going back home was out of mind
he gives us the directions to his grandmother’s house
it was bout
a half an hours ride
so i checked the time
it was nine but i have 10 missed calls, my parents are trying
to get a hold of me after noticing
i wasn’t in my
bed like i’m supposed to be
i had to call them back
and explain to them where i’m at
and tell them that i’d be hopefully
back home before they go to sleep
on that day i learned
a new appreciation of my mother and father’s concern
as we turn, into the driveway of denzel’s gogo’s house
she’s sitting outside on a chair, almost like she’s expecting us

our journey comes to an end as i put the car in park
i unlock, all the doors so this reunion could start
denzel slowly walks towards his grandmother in the dark
with his head down, his whole body shamefully arced
we watch denzel greet her while she… shows no emotion
huh ?
she doesn’t even hug him
he gets nothing
not even smile, he’s been missing 4 months now
she barely looks at him and says “get inside the house”
… i wasn’t expecting that
i thought she’d be happy, i explain to her what happened then
she begins to thank me
but then she says, “it’s hopeless in less than a week he’ll be leaving again
look, i would smile but it hurts to pretend
cause he’ll just runaway
sometimes i’m walking home from church and i’m scared that i will get home and he won’t be there”
that day we brought her more than her grandson
we brought stress and anxiety
combination of, love and fear
this wasn’t the first time that denzel had disappeared
hearing his gogo speak, had almost left us close to tears
our decisions had come with a consequence
we just wanted to help but somehow we did the opposite

[outro]
but that’s the story of life
tough problems, tougher solutions
we know we’re k!lling the earth
but we keep on polluting
we know that everyone’s struggling
but people are still looting
like sway, i don’t have the answers but i’ve come to a conclusion

if you can’t change the world
then just change yourself
next time you’re driving p-ssed a street kid, offer some help
how many clothes are in your closet that you don’t even wear
i swear, they’d make a huge difference to someone else

they say little light of mine, imma let it shine
but the lights in our streets don’t work
say little light of my mine, they deserve to shine
cause those lights in our streets have worth

this song is dedicated to kelvin chikuhuhu a former junior councillor who recently p-ssed. our thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family
thank you for listening
