the answer that i came to was, what is the basis of what’s christian? what is christian? christianity is not based on what christians have done. christianity is based on jesus christ. and if i can look at him, that’s what my faith’s in
because, what is heaven? heaven is being in the presence of god, face to face with god with no barrier, no shield. there’s never ever been anyone good enough to be in god’s presence in that way without shame, without separation. i mean, think about who god is. god is the creator of the universe. he’s holy. he’s absolutely, perfectly just, which means he can’t be in the presence of any evil. even the evil that’s in me. and so the question is, ok, i might be a good person when i compare myself to my neighbour or my dad or whatever. am i good enough to compare with god?
when someone came up to ask jesus about this question, he said “good teacher, what do i have to do to be saved? what do i have to do to get to heaven?” and jesus stopped him right there, he said, “what do you mean by good? only god alone is good.” and so if i compare myself and say, “ok, am i good enough?” that leads me to say: the only basis that i have for hoping to get to heaven is not on my goodness, but on jesus’s goodness. and if i can look at him, that’s what my faith’s in
