bio
young thug is an innovative new artist in the trap genre, with a new take on traditional rap vocals. this is going to sound like d-ck-riding, and although i’m not the biggest young thug fan, i’m going to give him the recognition he deserves. his public image is often… non conventional. i mean, every time he dresses himself it goes viral. his new high pitched almost wailing vocals are new and interesting. they sound like a more screwed drake. the likes of which have inspired artists like rae sremmurd to introduce similar vocals. this is the strong point of his music, his lyricism and themes leave much to be desired
young thug came out of the blue with his mixtape i came from nothing, and has since skyrocketed to the top with a release schedule only rivaled by gucci mane. but he didn’t break free of the underground until the release of the single stoner, which made him famous. his vocals were the best part of the song, and they have a sort of addictive feel to them; once you hear them, it never leaves your head. he then continued to release slightly more mainstream mixtapes and finally, his debut itunes “alb-m” barter 6, which caused the headline rivalry between lil wayne and young thug. the original title was going to be tha carter vi, but lil wayne sued, and it was renamed tha barter vi, and then finally, barter 6. but it seems like birdman has taken young thug on his side throughout the whole cash money vs. young money issue. soon, young thugs latest alb-m: hy!£un35 (or “hitunes”) will be released, preceded by the singles paradise and pacifier.
lyricism
young thug isn’t the best lyricist. his rhymes are simple, and are only taken at face value. his lyrics leave much to be desired, and often his lyrics are disgusting, or with cringe-worthy attempts at wordplay or similes. in his older work, he tried to do some really bad lyrical tricks, and nowadays he mostly just sticks to simple lyrics. he raps about the usual trap things: money, women and especially drugs
delivery
young thug’s delivery is his best feature. his odd drake-esque sing-song raps with a high pitched wailing is weirdly intriguing. half the time i can’t understand what he is saying, but his vocals are so catchy alone. he can do a lot with these vocals, like on the song paradise, with the hook he tries to do some singing, and it sounds really good. a little different, but so catchy and so nice. his work could be considered an acquired taste, but the fact that check has made it onto pretty much everyones ipod proves that he isn’t. and his trilling and whining in the background of songs are to die for. people hate on young thug because of his lyrics, and for good reason, but his delivery makes any lyrics pop. he can pull off with those vocals what no other rapper could
production
young thug has good trap production. he isn’t a producer himself, but the producers he pulls in, the likes of dun deal, london on da track and wheezy do a great job of producing thug’s hits
## concept/themes
young thug’s concept’s don’t extend beyond women, violence, money and drugs, but like i said, his delivery is what counts. he often uses disgusting lines and mentions/talks “pussy” so often it starts to make you feel sick. and sometimes he goes into a little too much detail about his sexual exploits
barter 6 thoughts
thug’s newest offering is nice. it only really had four notable songs: check, constantly hating, with that & halftime. all of the other songs pretty much sound the same. aside from those songs, the tape is pretty boring, his vocals do get old after awhile. od had young thug being more real than ever, and it maybe his most mentally conscious song. but overall the tape wasn’t much more than five songs and lots of filler

young thug is a pivotal new-school rap figure, and although his work leaves much to be desired, he is plowing the way for other artists with his vocals. he is one of the best new-school artists around, and he should continue to make newer music, i hope to see more and more thoughtful songs like od on his upcoming work. check him out, whether you’re a casual listener or are into technicalities, you should at least give him a shot
