the van slowed down, my bags were thrown out
i jumped out myself keeping clear of the mirrors on the side
before i realized what had happened
that i had jumped into darkness
the tail lights from the van had already passed by
and all i could see was

i saw no buildings, no house, no shed

nothing but a post, with a piece of board nailed to it
i went up close, i lit a match and looked at the board
there were a few inkblots
maybe a hundred years ago
there might havе been a name painted on therе
no light other than stars could be seen anywhere
i picked up my bags, sat down on one of them and looked around
to both sides there was the bush, a wall so dense and dry
greenish grey, now black, looking at the darkness
it was stooping slowly, irresistibly upon me where i sat

threatening me with its fangs
intending to swallow all of me
bone flesh heart soul
everything
who had said that to me many years ago
and why had it been said
i tried to remember this
just to keep my mind from breaking
the air was filled with chirping, whispering, murmuring, fiddling, whining, whimpering
now and then shrills and shrieks of fear and horror
all of the disembodied
a loud wall of nothing
the bush was singing its eternal song of stories
each story begins with the last line of the story just ended
my story is done and now i’m scared
my ride home is gone and so am i
my band and my van are gone and so am i
i won’t be going home again
and all i’m left with is this loud wall of nothing
