in our contemporary world, there exists a series of rare moments. these moments come infrequently * maybe a handful of times each decade * where an artist will release a project so complete, so masterful in its conception and execution, that it catapults them to the upper echelon of musical stardom. i’ve been working in this industry for nearly two decades now, and while i’m by no means a gеnius, i’m confident that i can recognize whеn one of these records surfaces

amongst our collective optimism, our renewed sense of progress having put the nightmare*ish 2020 behind us, we may have just found our next groundbreaking album, in the ambitious new release “ak to gucci”. with their soph0m*re project, established trap stars young ak and big gucci p solidify their place in the annals of modern day hip hop. “ak to gucci” sees the two mc’s elevate their lyricism and expand their vocal range, doing it all over crisp production and a polished thematic cohesion

the album opens with “tiger saw me”, a captivating intro track that grabs our attention and tells us to strap in for the wild ride ahead. a haunting echo*heavy melody is accented by a simple but powerful refrain by big gucci p for eight bars before we are slapped in the face with booming bass hits and driving hi*hats. lyrically, the track doesn’t try to do too much, it doesn’t have to, but it does achieve two important goals. it reminds us just how catchy the trapper duo’s combined vocals are, and it brings to the foreground the ep’s prominent themes: more drugs; more guns, and a h*ll of a lot more pimpery

a brief outro transitions us right into “i know”, where we’re welcomed by smooth piano chords, an impossible to resist string*synth loop and warm mids, all backed by punchy kick and snare. big gucci p again opens the vocals on this track, laying down another masterful hook. “rophynol, codeine and some fentanyl” he sings; there’s no doubt the bright bay*area style production from bailey weston has us feeling like we’re dosed on all three of these. at this point, we’re finally given our first real taste of young ak and his bars, and he does not disappoint. we get expertly mastered auto*tune and hard hitting rhymes about “pourin up” lean for his hoes, saying “f**k the 5*0” and of course, “shoes made out of rhino”. a clever chorus with subtle word play brings us to verse two, where big gucci p hits an absolute home run verse to close out the song. when it ends, we’re ready to ride around town with gucci and ak as they make their collections from the ladies; h*ll we’d even pay for some of the tickets to cairo, if it came to that

don’t look now, but we may have just stumbled upon the top track of the album. “court dates” is an instant classic; there’s no two ways about it. i have no doubt this song will be the project’s first and maybe most impactful single, and for good reason. layered production with trunk*knocking 808’s, a brutally honest expose of big gucci p and ak’s well*established criminal lifestyle, and a hook that lingers in your head longer than the line of crack fiends that used to wait outside their traphouse. in “court dates” we really start to see the storytelling of these two o.g’s shine. between big gucci p breaking down doors of rival pimps and delivering his “blessings”, to ak swerving through traffic high on lean with his trusty automatics at his side, these two make no secrets that they’re still very much in the game. don’t be surprised when this track dominates the charts this spring, having everyone from thugs to soccer moms singing about the goyard at their court dates

in an unreleased interview which took place weeks before the ep released, young ak was quoted as telling fans they could expect “heavy pimping vibes throughout” the project. our next track “pimp you out” more than delivers on this promise. the song opens with flowy acoustic guitar and some more impressive singing from big gucci p. in just a couple moments though, we’re thrown head first into the dark underworld of pimping. our tour guides? the three headed monster of ak, gucci, and self*proclaimed “dark trap” rapper kalicosays. the result is a vivid journey through a day (or night) in the life of a pimp: making sure employees stay in line; staring down courtroom judges; and “keeping a b**ch broke like the screen on her phone”. kalicosays was a surprising feature, given his distance from bgp and ak all the way out in california, but he absolutely k!lls his verse nonetheless and, dare i say it, steals the show on this one

on the penultimate track and final original composition “lovin me”, we find young ak and big gucci p wax poetic over an up*tempo dance hall groove. this is an ambitious and somewhat risky move for the dynamic duo, who have, in the past, predominately stuck with more typical hard hitting trap sound. the good news is, it works – actually, to be honest, it slaps. with a s*xy guitar riff, rhythmic hi*hats, and of course a big thumping bass line, this song has all the makings of a nightclub favourite; here’s hoping we get back to all that soon enough, if for no other reason than to hear the dj drop this one on the crowd. gilliganpiper makes an appearance as the second of two features on this record, and delivers a strong performance of snappy double*timed bars and a versatile set of flows. one thing i particularly enjoy about this track is the attention paid to little details – leaving in a handful of uncut sound bites, for example. the trap stars show a comfort level here with their fans, who will undoubtedly enjoy getting a sneak peek into their studio banter. maybe ak is right, this could even be the single

to close out the album, we get handed a double cup filled with an actavis*soaked version of “i know (leanmix)”. while on the surface it may seem like a simple change, the chopped and screwed version takes on a completely different feel and meaning. this is a fitting outro to “ak to gucci”, after living through the two artist’s collective pain, hustle, and downright ruthless ways, we too feel like we need to drown our sorrows in a sea of purple
ultimately, “ak to gucci” will set young ak and big gucci p on trajectory most trap kings*turned*artists could only ever dream of. however their newfound success as a result of this near*flawless ep won’t be any accident. these two have been putting in the hours in the booth, and the result is raw, unapologetic, and exactly what the fans have been waiting for, and then some

the mystery surrounding ak and gucci’s disappearance have people asking “what’s next for these two?” they are rumoured to be staying off the grid somewhere across the pond, possibly in northern africa. i won’t speculate on this, as my guess is as good as anyone’s, but the questions don’t stop there. will we hear from any of ak or gucci’s rivals? will the supposed second instalment of hit diss*track “fake citystar” ever see the light of day? one thing is for sure, wherever these two are right now, it’s a safe bet there’s plenty of lean, choppers, and guap. i truly hope this isn’t the last we hear from young ak and big gucci p, but if it is, they went out guns blazing with what might go down as one of the greatest rap albums of the modern era
